PHOTO HOSTING SITES FOR CREATING ONLINE PHOTO ALUBMS

Most folks don't have the time or expertise to create their own "home page" to display their photos and prefer to use online hosting sites to share their photos with friends and relatives. The best ones charge a small fee for the space. Many are free, but are laden with ads and try to sell your photos as prints, mugs, mouse pads, etc.

What's the best photo hosting site?

There are many free and paid photo hosting sites. Here are some that are popular. I use ImageEvent.com.

Image Event Fast, easy, and powerful, slide show presentation
Smugmug.com excellent photo-sharing site, easy to use and professional sites too
Flickr.com has free and Premium accounts. Visitors can leave comments on photos
Webshots.com has free and Premium accounts
Fotki.com has free and Premium accounts
Photobucket free video and photo sharing. Easily host and link your images and videos to auction sites, blogs, and message boards.

There is also a great Guide To Online Photo Albums which contains detailed info on various sites including their fees and features.

Should I trust the photo hosting sites?

Not as the sole storage place for your photos. Many such sites have gone out of business. You should always keep multiple backup copies of your cherished photos. To be safe, you should probably store your photos on your hard drive and on CDs and DVDs and check the discs regularly. Copy them over every couple of years so you always have a newer copy. They should be stored only in a cool, dry place and preferbly a dark place since light and heat are to be avoided. Nowdays, external USB hard drives are very inexpensive and the best way to back up your photos! Check at buy.come, newegg.com and amazon.com.
